net view

SafeList network shares

net view \\<server>

Lists a server's shares — the first 'can I even see it?' check in share troubleshooting.

Examples

  • net view \\fileserverEnumerate shares
  • net view \\fileserver /allInclude administrative shares such as C$
  • net use \\fileserver\shareConnect to confirm authentication works
  • Get-SmbShareList shares on the server itself (PowerShell)

Syntax

net view [\\computer]

Key points

  • On Windows 10 and 11, net view without a server name relies on SMB1 and usually returns nothing. Always add \\server.
  • System error 53 means the network path was not found (name resolution or port 445); 5 means access denied.
  • Shares missing from the list (hidden shares) can still be opened if you know the name.

When it does not work

  • Error 6118 (list of servers not available) appears when no server name is given. Specify the server.
